biography

thomas juul-hansen was born and raised in copenhagen, denmark.

thomas received his bachelor of architecture from university of miami and a master of architecture from harvard university graduate school of design.

after working at richard meier and partners architects in new york, he founded thomas juul-hansen, llc in 2003.

since its foundation in 2003, thomas juul-hansen, llc has developed a diverse body of design work including residential, hospitality and retail. the firm typically only engages in projects where they can impact the full spectrum of design: exterior, interior as well as all furnishings involved. it is critical for the quality of the project that all design decisions are made with the same goal in mind.

with each project, the firm explores unique and innovative formal solutions to create a timeless manifesto through thoughtful investigations of contextual sensitivity, materiality and customization. fundamental to this pursuit is the belief that quality of design is a progressive process informed by the forces of site and circumstance, culture and climate, program and function.

“we believe that each site has an inherent answer already built-in, and it’s our job to uncover the architectural solutions based on where and what we are building.  every decision we make has one foot planted on practicality. no decisions are made for aesthetics alone. residential design must be practical and the functions required to have a high-quality residence necessitates immense focus on usefulness.

because the majority of our works are for-sale ground up condominium buildings, we are experts in not only the planning and design of such buildings, but also consider ourselves authorities on the cost and means of construction.  This means we understand that if we propose to our clients to spend a dollar, we believe our client will get two back.

we are interested in quality over trends or style. we believe that money spent on the quality of construction materials is better spent than making designs that a trendy or fashionable. to counteract against trends, we believe natural materials like stone and wood will assist the designs in approaching their goal: the never-ending search for timelessness. in particular, we use natural stone as a signature materials for all residential projects;. no one goes to rome and exclaims that travertine is so 200 bc….”

several ongoing current and completed projects include 505 w 19 on the chelsea high line; belgravia gate in london; two ten west 77 on the upper west side of manhattan; 300 collins in south beach; one57 in midtown west; 96+broadway on the upper west side; 60e86 on the upper east side and sutton tower on the east side of midtown in sutton place of manhattan.

additionally, the firm has designed a number of private commissions for clients including chef jean georges vongerichten. The firm not only designed the offices and residence of jean georges but has also designed a number of restaurants including the signature restaurant JEAN GEORGES, nougatine, perry st, jojo, paris café at the TWA in jfk and the inn at pound ridge.

thomas juul-hansen, llc has collaborated with new york city developers extell, hfz, naftali group, alf naman, glenwood, time equities/francis greenburger, jvp management and works closely with marketing groups corcoran sunshine, compass and douglas elliman.
